Chapter 49: Unaccustomed

[YoYo]: But he really understands alpha better than I do.

[Lan]: That shouldn't be the case. Based on what you described before, I think he is a very simple and straightforward alpha.

[YoYo]: Maybe I misjudged him?

[Lan]: Then let's be cautious and not expose ourselves.

[YoYo]: Yeah.

[YoYo]: I'll back off for now and see how things unfold.

"Had a good rest?" the photographer asked. "Just a few more shots, and we'll be done."

The final part was photos with the bed.

Xie Wang hesitated for a moment: "You'll lie on the bed?"

Lin Jianlu spread a few pieces of draft paper on the bed, lay down on them, and held a pen in his hand.

After some thought, he pushed the phone used for the shoot to the side of the bed. The red headphone cord wrapped loosely around his pale wrist.

One pillow was propped under his hands, while another had been pushed aside.

This was all he could think of.

"Is this okay?" the photographer asked Xie Wang. "As expected of an artist who was unanimously approved by the entire advertising and promotion department. Just a few pointers and he immediately gets what you mean."

Isn't that right? This is his old line of work.

Xie Wang snarked inwardly.

"It's great," Xie Wang said, as he tucked the other pillow next to Lin Jianlu's hand, then coiled the red headphone cord loosely around Lin Jianlu's neck. He stopped at an angle so deliberately tricky that any alpha seeing it would feel compelled to untangle it. Finally, he adjusted the room's lighting to a soft, ambiguous warm yellow.

"This is brilliant," the photographer said. "I thought it was already good enough before."

Lin Jianlu: "?"

Xie Wang really seemed to know his stuff.

Then why didn't Xie Wang show any scheming when he flirted with him?

Even at the beginning, Xie Wang didn't pick up on his hints.

"It's already 9," the photographer said. "Let's call it a day. These photos and videos turned out great. The final edits will definitely be stunning."

Only then did Lin Jianlu find some free time to ask Xie Wang, "Why are you here today?"

Xie Wang replied, "My brother owns the company. He started it for fun. He was called away at the last minute, so I came instead."

Lin Jianlu made a small sound of acknowledgment.

A highly competitive furniture company like XI was just started for fun.

He had quietly looked into the Xie family's background after setting his sights on Xie Wang, but hearing it firsthand still caught him off guard.

Not someone to mess with.

The shoot ended earlier than expected, and Lin Jianlu's manager hadn't arrived to pick him up. Deciding not to trouble her, he figured he could just take a taxi back to school himself.

"Heading back?" Xie Wang took a few steps closer. "I'll drive you back to school."

"Mm." Lin Jianlu nodded.

He had decided to back off for now, so why was Xie Wang still offering to take him back?

Outside the warm, spacious home furnishings showroom, the wind was icy, a mix of snow and gusts whipping around.

The chill crept into his sleeves, making Lin Jianlu shiver and want to curl up. A large down jacket suddenly dropped over him. Xie Wang, as if anticipating this moment, wrapped him up tightly and pulled him into his arms, guiding him step by step toward the parked car.

He hadn't made a move.

So why was this A voluntarily coming closer?

The tenderness and comfort between AO is fleeting—here now and gone the next—particularly brief. Without physical attraction, the deep attachment fades away.

Then why was Xie Wang still showing him such care?

Just like before, Xie Wang drove the car straight onto X University's campus, dropping him off at the bottom of the dorm building.

After such a long shoot, Xie Wang hadn't even had a chance to drink water. Lin Jianlu suddenly thought of this.

"Wait a moment," Lin Jianlu said.

He pushed open the car door and stepped into the cold wind.

It wasn't that late, and the shop outside the dorms still had its lights on. Lin Jianlu bought a can of hot coffee.

The alpha really didn't leave.

The bold red sports car with its lights on was still waiting for him at the dorm entrance.

Good boy.

This thought popped up in Lin Jianlu's mind.

"Thanks for teaching me how to pose for the photos." He handed the hot coffee to Xie Wang.

Xie Wang laughed softly: "No need to thank me." It's all your own special skill, simply returned to you as is.

"See you tomorrow," Lin Jianlu said. They had to head to the set for filming the next day.

Xie Wang drove off, and Lin Jianlu went back into the shop to buy a stack of draft paper before finally returning to the dorm. The dorm manager spotted him coming back from afar and greeted him.

"Were you working or studying? Coming back so late?" the dorm manager asked.

Lin Jianlu: "Work."

"Was that your alpha's car just now?" The dorm manager gave him a teasing smile.

Lin Jianlu was startled by the question.

He froze for two seconds, then quickly explained, "He's not my alpha."

"Oh, look at you, getting all shy," the dorm manager said. "Don't spend all your time buried in studies. There's nothing wrong with finding an alpha you like."

"I'll head up now," he said.

In the dorm, Wei Lan was eating fried chicken while simultaneously flirting with his twenty or so alphas.

"YoYo," Wei Lan called out, handing Lin Jianlu a drumstick. "Saved this for you."

"What are you looking at?" Lin Jianlu's gaze paused on Wei Lan's computer screen.

It was Xie Wang's profile on an encyclopedia.

Xie Wang, male, alpha.

Sexual orientation: omega.

"With the way he's so into you," Wei Lan said, "there's no way he likes alphas."

Lin Jianlu: "I think so too."

"I don't dare flirt with him anymore," Lin Jianlu admitted. "I'm afraid my little tricks aren't even worth mentioning in front of him."

Wei Lan: "Then just lay low for now. Let's wait and see how things go. I'll find some books to help you brush up."This is stolen from https://chipoholictranslations.blogspot.com/p/homepage.html

Wei Lan: "Fierce A are usually stupid, this doesn't add up."

Lin Jianlu: "Okay."

At his desk, under the warm and clear light of the lamp, Lin Jianlu finished some recent assignments.

A notification popped up on his phone screen:

[Traffic Alert]: An accident occurred on the middle section of Zhiya Road 15 minutes ago. Please avoid the area if traveling.

Wasn't that the same road Xie Wang took to drop him off just now?

Would Xie Wang have passed through there on his way back to the Xie residence?

He sent Xie Wang a message.

[YoYo]: I left my power bank in your car.

Xie Wang didn't reply.

Lin Jianlu then tried calling his phone, but no one picked up.

"Did a traffic accident happen on Zhiya Road?" he asked Wei Lan.

Wei Lan: "? Why do you care about this? I don't know."

Wei Lan checked: "It says some alpha mistook the accelerator for the brake."

Lin Jianlu: "Ah…"

Just as he was about to ask more, his phone rang. The caller ID showed it was Xie Wang.

"What's up, YoYo?" Xie Wang asked. "I just went to the supermarket, and the signal was bad."

The alpha's voice sounded calm, even slightly cheerful.

"It's nothing," Lin Jianlu said. "I left my power bank in your car."

"You might as well leave yourself in my car too," Xie Wang teased, his voice carrying a smile. "Go to sleep. Tomorrow's scene will be a tad difficult."

Lin Jianlu hung up the phone.

What was he doing?

Why did he call Xie Wang?

The Xie residence and XI Company weren't even in the same urban area, and he knew very well that the chances of Xie Wang taking that road on his way back were very low.

As if he's not calm enough.

***

The next day, Lin Jianlu was picked up early by Hidden Blade's production car.

"Everyone cheer up," the director shouted. "Today's scene is very important."

The director added, "Did you all have fun recording the variety show? Hurry up and get back into character, or I'll deal with each of you myself."

By the time Lin Jianlu finished his makeup, Xie Wang was already doing parkour in front of the camera.

The alpha navigated through precisely calculated explosion points, suspended by wires, leaping from one end of a shipping container to the other as shards of debris scattered in all directions.

Xie Wang rolled on the spot, narrowly avoiding a massive explosion.

Chen Yimo, standing nearby, whistled.

"Not bad, Da Wang!" Chen Yimo said. "Success at first take, very cool."

Lin Jianlu: "?"

What else?

Is there even a chance for failure?

A mere fatal injury?

Handsome, no doubt about that.

The alpha stood at the edge of the shipping container, his army-green jacket flapping open as he faced the heatwave of the explosion. Pulling out a pair of binoculars, he surveyed the surroundings.

But it's so dangerous!

For the sake of authentic tension on screen, Xie Wang was practically stepping right on the explosion points. The blast waves chased after him.

Lin Jianlu stared blankly, feeling like the scene was depicting a man sprinting ahead while his soul scrambled to keep up behind him.

He had seen plenty of Xie Wang's explosive stunts before. He used to think they were exhilarating and cool, feeling that's how a Fierce A should be.

Now he felt that Xie Wang was taking reckless risks, and watching it made his heart race with unease.

"Enjoying the show?" the director came over to ask.

Lin Jianlu nodded.

"Great," the director said. "I've got a sequence lined up for you too—plenty of sparks and explosions."

Lin Jianlu: "..."

Director: "After you two team up to kill the pervert, you need to escape the exploding dock. In the first half, Da Wang will pull you along as you run; in the second half, he'll escape carrying you on his back. What worries me is the first half."

Lin Jianlu had never filmed a scene like this before.

So when Xie Wang, still reeking of smoke and gunpowder, walked over, the first thing he saw was an omega frowning slightly.

"Scared?" Xie Wang asked.

Lin Jianlu shook his head.

"Don't shoot if you're scared," Xie Wang said. "Tell the director to replace you with AI."

Director: "???"

Director: "Why don't we just replace everyone and turn Hidden Blade into an animated film?"

"It's fine," Lin Jianlu said.

"Come with me," Xie Wang said.

The abandoned dock set had been bought and altered by the production crew specifically for this scene—and now it was all going to be blown up.

Xie Wang nudged Lin Jianlu forward to start marking the route.

"Dial it down," Xie Wang told the pyrotechnician. "Just make it loud with a bit of fire. Use special effects for the rest. You've gotten addicted to blowing things up."

"Weren't you running enthusiastically just now?" the pyrotechnician said aggrievedly as he cut the gunpowder in half. "I thought you liked extra dramatic things!"

Xie Wang: "Get lost!"

"Come, I'll walk you through the route." Xie Wang brought Lin Jianlu to the starting point. "We're running together. Actually, you can just follow me—hold my hand or grab onto my jacket. Don't be scared."This is stolen from https://chipoholictranslations.blogspot.com/p/homepage.html

Lin Jianlu: "Got it."

Xie Wang held Lin Jianlu's hand, guiding him through the route nearly ten times. By the time they finally finished practicing—just before Lin Jianlu was about to snap—Xie Wang called it done.

He didn't seem to show the same caution when it came to himself.

Lin Jianlu sat with his script, memorizing lines.

The script described how the detective reunited with his omega and returned to their small town, where the two enjoyed the tenderness of a rekindled love; the scene was warm.

Getting married and having his own alpha sounded quite nice.

Thoughts of marrying Xie Wang suddenly resurfaced in his heart.

Xie Wang grabbed a bottle of mineral water from a carton. Noticing that Lin Jianlu was looking at him, he switched to unscrewing the cap with one hand.

This horny deer had been unusually well-behaved today, like he'd temporarily switched modes to a cold and pure O. From morning until now, he had not set any traps for Xie Wang.

Xie Wang felt a little unaccustomed to walking on this temporarily smooth road.
