Chapter 11: Spotted Pig

134.

Old Man Li was over ninety years old.

He breathed his last surrounded by his wife and many descendants. His soul left his body, and he saw a middle-aged man with a briefcase under his arm and a smile on his face standing at the door. Old Man Li looked back at his family for the last time, and then left with the middle-aged man.

The road to the Underworld was long. Old Man Li was hunched over, gasping for air with every step, and moving as slowly as a snail. The middle-aged man reminded him: "Old Man, your soul has left your body. You can return to any age you want. It is not necessary to keep the age at the time of death."

Old Man Li was half-deaf and half-blind. He cupped his ear and asked: "Wawa, what did you say? Speak louder!" [Old Man Li calling a ghost messenger wawa is hilarious. Wawa means bay/doll/little child... you get the idea.]

The middle-aged man raised his voice and repeated: "Some of the souls I picked up returned to their school days, saying what they regretted the most was missing out on the girl with the long ponytail sitting in front of them who glared back at them. Some went back to the moment before their wedding vows, saying they wish they never got married. Some went back to the time they got theie college admission letters, some went back to the moment they rang the bell at the New York Stock Exchange... In short, most of them have gone back to a certain moment in their lives."

Old Man Li understood and hurriedly waved his hands: "No, no! My wife will live longer than me. When she comes and sees I've become a young man, she will definitely scold me again!"

The middle-aged man asked in jest, "Old Man, you're not planning to wait for your wife at the Bridge of Helplessness, are you?"

Old Man Li glared, "Of course I have to wait! Otherwise, she'll get lost at the Yellow Springs when she arrives and scold me again!"

The middle-aged man thought for a while, "Speaking of waiting for someone at the Bridge of Helplessness, I thought of somebody."

Old Man Li tried hard to listen with his ears cupped.

The middle-aged man gave a soft tut, "The man was about to drink Meng Po's soup, but he heard some news and rushed back to the human world. After a few days of playing crazy and making a din, he came back and stated politely that he wished to reincarnate well. Nobody expected him to walk across the Bridge of Helplessness and then regret it. He threw a terrible tantrum while clutching Meng Po's leg. He played the rogue incredibly well, almost driving Meng Po mad."

Old Man Li was curious: "And then?"

Middle-aged man: "Then? When a person is reincarnated, it involves a ton of paperwork. The fate of their life, the people they met, and the impact on everyone with whom they have interacted... like the butterfly effect. He was adamant about not reincarnating, and all of his documents had to be altered. Meng Po was at her wits' end and had no choice but to entrust the documents to the ghost messengers. As a result, the ghost messengers on duty now hate even hearing his name."

The middle-aged man paused, then said: "The key point about this man is that he was let off lightly and still dares to complain. He won't reincarnate, so whatever, but instead of going out and existing a s a wandering ghost, he insists on sticking near the Bridge of Helplessness like plaster and constantly disrupts Underworld's work. In recent years, Meng Po has gotten a few more forehead wrinkles thanks to him... Come to think of it, it's been more than ten years now, and according to my calculations, Meng Po will be getting more wrinkles soon."

Old Man Li asked curiously: "Why is he like this?"

The middle-aged man looked complicated: "Well..."

It was, in fact, nothing much. I met a ghost a few years later, while I was waiting for my reincarnation. The ghost actually knew Su Yu and we babbled. The ghost then informed me that Su Yu later got married and even had children.

Of course, I wasn't planning to rush back.

What could I say to him if I went back to him? This thing specially called my soul back to marry me at the time. That sense of camaraderie was enough. Before he married and had children, I had been dead for a few years. That was already generous.

However, if he wanted me to forget about the lovely dream we'd shared and reincarnate cleanly, it was imposable.

I considered it and decided to wait by the bridge and ask him for an explanation in person.

If I had to wait, I had to wait seriously, without overlooking any ghost who crossed the Bridge of Helplessness.

The problem is that these ghosts seem to have an inexplicable misconception about me. They believe I am a deeply sentimental lover pining for my beloved, my heart aching with longing to be reunited. As a result, every ghost who crosses the Bridge of Helplessness looks at me with admiration, reflecting on their lack of cherishment for their feelings, and many even excitedly declare they don't want to drink the soup anymore so they can continue their relationship with their lover in the next life.

Meng Po stated that this has caused significant disruption to her work, and she has glared at me every day to vent her rage.

Baby feels bitter, but Baby won't say anything.

I was rationally and harmoniously discussing the problem with Meng Po when I was called from behind.

Meng Po: After waiting for so many years, just when will you leave?!
Me: I won't!
Meng Po: Get lost!
Me: No! Hehehe!
Meng Po: What exactly are you waiting for?
Me: I want to see which family's cabbage my pig has eaten! [A play on "how could the little white cabbage we raised for so many years be dug up by a pig?" expressing mock despair or reluctance about a daughter getting a boyfriend or getting married.]

An old voice came from behind: "Young man, are you waiting for your pig? I'll wait with you!"

When I turned around, I saw a hunched old man staring at me.

Then the smiling Big Brother next to him introduced me and said Old Man Li was also waiting for someone by the bridge, so we could accompany each other.

I was happy to have Old Man Li's company, but he could only hear one word in a sentence at most, and chose that word to continue the conversation.

Me: Not a pig, I'm waiting for someone.
Old Man Li: Ah, someone else's pig?
Me: Not someone else's pig, I'm waiting for a person.
Old Man Li: Ah, whose pig?
Me: Not anyone's, just a person.
Old Man Li: Oh, a pig that looks like a person.
Me: ... ...
Old Man Li: What kind of pig? I will help you take a look!
I thought about it and said: 1.85 meters tall, long legged and very handsome.
Old Man Li: Oh, very handsome, that's a spotted pig!

Perhaps Old Man Li was too friendly, making all ghosts feel close to him. After a while, all the little ghosts lining up by the Bridge of Helplessness spontaneously started helping me find pigs.

A truckload of pigs enter the Underworld every time the slaughterhouse opens. Especially when there are spotted pigs in the truck, endless warm calls for me ring out from the gates of the Underworld all the way to the Bridge of Helplessness.

Me: ……
...Thank you all, really.
