Chapter 9: Falling into enemy hands

The light flickered as the car drove past in Lin Jianlu's peripheral vision.

He unplugged the headphone cable from Wei Lan's computer, took them off, and put them back in his backpack.

"How is it?" Wei Lan pointed at the voice chat record on the computer and asked, "I met this one a few days ago. Doesn't he have a great singing voice?"

Wei Lan added, "He even called me 'little darling.' I'm going to fall for him."

"One line was off-key," Lin Jianlu said.

Wei Lan: "..."

"YoYo," Wei Lan said, "you're too picky. How can there be an alpha who's perfect in every way."

Lin Jianlu: "Yeah."

He was indeed picky.

Even with Xie Wang, an alpha whose body and looks matched his tastes so well, he still felt something was missing—a lack of that spark that would make him truly infatuated, so he kept hesitating.

But tonight, in front of the advertisement shelves, Xie Wang grabbing his shoulder and wanting to question him made him like Xie Wang very much.

Lin Jianlu used a ride-hailing app to call a taxi. By the time the two returned to the dormitory, the dorm supervisor was just locking the door.

The dorm supervisor had a notorious reputation for being strict. Any omega returning late would receive a severe scolding, and the last time, someone even ended up being scolded to tears.

Today's dorm supervisor was also very upset. He had just locked the glass door when he noticed two shadows gradually approaching under the streetlamp.

He was ready to start yelling, but then one of the black-haired boys looked at him. The child's eyes were like stars soaked in dew—slightly cold and crystal clear.

It's Lin Jianlu.

The dorm supervisor cooled down immediately.

A model student who had been personally praised by the principal multiple times.

Rumor had it that this child's family didn't treat him well, and he worked especially hard in his studies.

It was this late, and he was only just coming back from studying.

"Hurry and get inside, you two," the dorm supervisor said as he opened the door. "Make sure to get some rest, don't overwork yourselves."

Lin Jianlu bowed his head slightly: "Thank you."

Wei Lan bowed to the dorm supervisor.

Good studentx2 walked towards the dormitory under the admiring and expectant gaze of the dorm supervisor.

Lin Jianlu placed his unfinished grapefruit sparkling water on his desk.

"You're still up?" The company's manager called him. "I wanted to ask you about something that's just come in."

Lin Jianlu: "Mn, I'm up."

"Do you want to act in a movie?" the manager asked. "You have great looks, and you'd look amazing on the big screen."

"I don't want to," Lin Jianlu replied.

Manager: "..."

"It won't take up much of your time, and there are very few scenes," the manager tried to persuade him.

Lin Jianlu: "Sorry, I'm not interested."

"Alright," the manager sighed. "I respect your wishes. It's the Hidden Blade movie crew. They contacted us after seeing your contestant credentials released by Seeking Sound."

Lin Jianlu: "?"

Lin Jianlu: "Although I'm not interested, I can give it a try."

Manager: "! That's great! I'll take you to the set tomorrow so we can try out the costume makeup and a scene or two."

Lin Jianlu: "Okay."

After chatting with his 20 or so alpha xiao-geges, Wei Lan deleted one who had asked to see his glands because he was feeling lonely late at night. Then, carrying his basket, he went to take a shower. When he returned, he found a stack of books on Lin Jianlu's desk.

Lin Jianlu was sitting at his desk, engrossed in reading.

Wei Lan glanced at the book titles: Learn Basic Acting Techniques in a Week, How to Be a Successful Actor, Basic Rules for Memorizing Lines, How Actors Express Emotions etc.

Wei Lan: "..."

Too dedicated.

He yawned, shook his head, and went to bed.

Lin Jianlu studied late into the night, finally falling sound asleep with a book in his arms.

The next day at noon, the Xingluo Entertainment manager drove to the dormitory building of X University to pick up Lin Jianlu.

At the filming location of Hidden Blade, Xie Wang had just finished shooting an action scene.

He helped the two minor actors who had played his opponents up from the ground, said sorry, and asked if they were hurt before grabbing a bottle of mineral water and sitting on a bench near the set to rest.

Having lived through it once before, Xie Wang now found this film easy to handle.

However, if he wanted to continue pushing the boundaries, he needed to grasp the details of his character even further.

"Teacher Xie," his assistant came over and called him, "the director wants to see you."

A few tents had been set up at a distance, serving as the resting area for the director team and actors.

Xie Wang spotted Lin Jianlu from afar.

The crew was filming outdoors today at an abandoned dock, full of rusty iron barrels and damaged containers.

In this shabby and chaotic environment, the clean and innocent-looking young man stood out all the more.

Lin Jianlu sat on a chair in front of an iron barrel, wearing a black hoodie and holding a thin two-page script, flipping through it with his head down.

He looked like a vivid flower blooming in the ruins of an apocalypse, leading to people falling over each other in their eagerness to pick him.

Some of the crew members were also watching him secretly.

"Da Wang!" An alpha suddenly jumped out of a tent. "The director says he's found your wife!"

Xie Wang: "..."

Lin Jianlu lifted his head from the script, glanced at the newcomer, and then disinterestedly looked back down, giving Xie Wang only an extra two seconds of attention.

The alpha who spoke still hadn't noticed anything and continued loudly, "Where is she?! I'll kidnap her at once."

"Chen Zimo, keep your mouth shut," Xie Wang said, veins throbbing at his temple.

This person was the biggest villain in the movie Hidden Blade, playing a brooding, high-IQ criminal maniac. He was Xie Wang's opponent in the film and also a talented actor with a great future later on.

"Can you memorize the script?" Xie Wang asked, leaning over to Lin Jianlu.

"It's very simple," Lin Jianlu replied.

What a waste of the all-nighter he pulled self-tutoring. This role simply didn't have many lines.

The entire play was about being kidnapped, bullied, then rescued, and finally ending with a hug given to the protagonist A.

The most frequent line was simply, "Help!"

Help.

The previous actor must have sucked to have been replaced after shooting had already started.

"YoYo." The Xingluo manager poked his head out from the tent and was startled by the circle of alphas outside. After a pause, he said, "The director is very satisfied with your looks. Come over, we'll do a quick test of makeup and acting. Hurry up."

Lin Jianlu stood up, leaving the two alphas behind.

"Your crew has way too many alphas," the Xingluo manager said. "Can you guarantee my artist's safety during the filming?"

The manager was worried: "Our Yoyo doesn't like to talk, but he's very well-behaved and innocent. We're training him as a singer-songwriter, so you must ensure his safety."

"Don't worry," the director said. "I'll have Xie Wang keep an eye on him; they are recording the same variety show anyway."

"Alright," the manager said.

Lin Jianlu was taken to the dressing room, where the styling team provided him with his costume.

The character in the script was a painter, so the team gave him a simple white shirt and gray casual pants. The clothing details were handled by staining them with a bit of paint.

"Looks great," the makeup artist complimented. "Little brother, white suits you."

"The makeup and styling are indeed good," the director praised after seeing him. "Let's try a scene."

Xie Wang had to admit that Lin Jianlu was quite fitting for the role.

In the script, the protagonist detective's wife isn't a clingy, little sweet O, but rather a little beauty with a somewhat cold personality.

Before his rebirth, prior to the final decision to cut the scenes, the director complained countless times that Xie Wang and his wife in the film had no sense of CP.

Xie Wang attributed this to the fact that he disliked the cold and distant type.

"Come try a scene." The director, always favoring actors who fit their roles, was eager to give it a shot at once. "Which part should we try?"

Chen Zimo, playing the perverted murderous lunatic, suggested, "Let's do the last part; Xie Wang comes over and I provoke him."

Xie Wang: "Wait..."

"Alright," the director said. "This part has few lines. Lin Jianlu, your script has only two lines. Please read it first. The makeup artist will deal with the styling."

Lin Jianlu was taken away by the makeup artist.

Chen Yimo hummed a tune, but halfway through, he realized that a pair of eyes seemed to be glaring at him.

Chen Yimo: "?"

Chen Yimo: "What, don't want to shoot or something?"

Xie Wang hissed, unsure how to explain it to him clearly.

He took a deep breath, snatched the script from Chen Yimo's hands, and slapped it onto the table. He then pulled a prop pen from Chen Yimo's white coat pocket and circled a few words in the script.

Chen Yimo glanced at the script and saw that Xie Wang had circled phrases like "grips neck," "twists the arm," "forcefully pins down," and "intentionally injures."

"Take it easy with the force," Xie Wang said. "He's not a professional actor, so don't be reckless."

Chen Yimo: "?"

Chen Yimo: "I say! DaWang, is he really your wife?"

Chen Yimo added, "Relax. I might be playing a perverted homicidal maniac, but I'm very nice and won't hurt anyone. I'm not a bad person. In fact, I hate the word 'pervert.'"

"You'd better not be," Xie Wang said.

A moment later.

"You'll also be holding a scalpel?" Xie Wang asked again.

Chen Yimo: "?"

He pulled a scalpel out of the pocket of his white coat costume and poked Xie Wang's arm with it a couple of times.

"It's made of cardboard, it's dull," Chen Yimo said.

Xie Wang snatched it away and turned it over in his hands, inspecting it over and over again.

"Don't f*cking break it," Chen Yimo said worriedly. "I only have this one."

This scene wasn't difficult for Lin Jianlu. In the script, the omega, after being imprisoned for several days and on the verge of death, is dragged out by the yukaihan played by Chen Yimo as a tool to threaten Xie Wang.

[yukaihan is a Japanese term for a thrill-seeking criminal who commits crimes to cause public panic and enjoys watching the resulting fear and confusion.]

He only had two lines: telling Xie Wang to "run" and "get out."

Xie Wang stared at the rope tied around Lin Jianlu's wrist, a bit lost in thought.

What kind of material did the props team use? Was it rough?

Lin Jianlus's skin was very sensitive, easily marked. Even the red marks from messing around with a tie took almost a week to fade.

Moreover, the fake wounds created by the crew looked disturbingly real.

The crew pushed Lin Jianlu into the iron cage that had been set up on the dock.

This wasn't an official shoot, so the set was kept simple.

The omega showed no expression, simply sitting on the ground and staring down at his wrists.

Xie Wang looked away.

The sight made him angry.

The director, on the other hand, was thrilled, his eyes lighting up.

The cool, detached demeanor combined with a sense of fragility was perfect—it evoked a strong protective instinct and also had a striking visual impact.

"Get ready for a scene," the director called out. "Where's the pervert?"

"Ah, here, here!" Chen Yimo stood up and walked to the center of the set.

Xie Wang followed him over.

Once in character, Chen Yimo seemed like a completely different person. He kicked open the door of the iron cage, grabbed the omega by the throat, and pushed him to the ground, flashing a taunting smile at Xie Wang.

The scalpel was pressed against the omega's neck.

Lin Jianlu frowned slightly, struggling to lift his head to look at Xie Wang, who had rushed over. He mouthed the words "run."

Xie Wang's eyes turned red all of a sudden.

His prop gun holding hand shook hard and he let out a low growl.

His omega was so slender, and the arm in that pervert's grip looked so fragile.

Oh Lin Jianlu, does it hurt?

"The details are spot on!" The director, who had been observing the trial scene, applauded. "Da Wang's handling of this part is marvelous—so real."
